Early set with ancient tiles in simple box with sliding lid. Eldest set in my collections.
Box (155x142x78mm) is Chinese. The small and tall case made of (a kind of) rosewood. It has no lid and it never had. With three wider drawers and two smaller ones. Each drawer is on both sides decorated with a tiny ornament. The case too. It has one handle on top and a each drawer has a ‘puller’. Two wide drawers contain each 47 tiles. One holds 46 tiles. The case is not as old as it looks. For instance there are no dovetails used and the decorations are possibly transfers.
Tiles (18x24x14mm) are Chinese. Made of fine, thick bone and matured but almost too thin bamboo. Their size is rather small. They are lacking Western initials and numbers. The characters are worn down. There are only four instead of eight season tiles an of each foursome just two. Respectively two Chinese figures and the Caterpillar and Rooster.
The set has no spare tiles and most likely never did.
